Shopify v Magento – The Learning Curve

Shopify by far is the easier system to use when it comes to the learning curve. This means people coming into your company or allocated admins can be up to speed quite quickly on using the Shopify interface. Magento, on the other hand, has a longer learning curve, this can be a disadvantage when bringing in new admins to manage the store and typically more training is involved and expenditure.

For shops who need to sync their online sales with their over the counter sales, a POS OR Point of Sale system in necessary. This ensures that there is no conflict between selling over the counter and online. Inventory is automatically updated between the online and bricks and mortar shop. Ensuring no products are sold to an online customer that had just been sold out as a result of a customer coming into the shop and purchasing the same item with the particular product no longer available. With Magento, POS systems do not come native as it does with Shopify. The Shopify POS is developed by Shopify and so is fully functional and seamlessly integrated. We found that with Magento because of the reliance of third party POS software, integration and resolving bugs were time-consuming.

Shopify or Magento – Security Patches & Bug Issues

Magento Open Source needs constant security patches and bug fixes. Because it’s open source it’s forums that provide the solution to finding the fixes to these inevitable bug issues. When this needs to be done it can involve time and effort and in most cases the need to get a developer involved in this. The result can be delays in getting fixes updated through the need to investigate and then get the expertise to fix.  On the other hand, Shopify is not affected by this and is constantly maintained and automatically updated, ensuring a smooth functioning bug-free platform.

 

Shopify v Magento – Adding Functionality

Shopify hands down is the winner when it comes to adding additional features to an online shop. Applications can be installed through the admin panel with one click. Shopify has many applications such as MailChimp, Facebook Store, Better Coupon Box, UpSell and Cross-Sell App, Sweet Tooth Loyalty app, Digital Downloads and hundreds of more. Some are free, more are upgradable to paid versions. With Magento, applications integration is a bit more complicated.

Magento Open Source often requires a developer to carry out specific upgrades and security patches. When things go wrong with Magento, they go wrong! Businesses may find it difficult to find a reliable developer to make timely updates and fixes. Often a developer is not willing to come in and take over an existing bug filled Magento website. The reason for this is a developer could be going into a fix a series of issues that could be extensive and usually, an amount of these are initially unknown until further investigation on the platform is carried out.
